What Is CPS? Cost per Sale and How Sale-Based Commissions Work

Cost per sale pays you when a referred visitor buys. How CPS commissions are calculated, refunds and holds, a worked example, and how CPS compares to CPA, CPL and RevShare.

Cost per sale, CPS, is a deal where you earn a commission only when a visitor you referred buys something. From the merchant's side it is what each sale costs them in affiliate fees. It is also called pay per sale, and it is how most retail and subscription affiliate programs pay.

CPS puts almost all the risk on you: clicks and sign-ups that don't buy earn nothing. In return the commission per sale is the largest of any model, and the merchant only pays for real business, which is why CPS programs are easy to join.

How a CPS commission is calculated

There are two common shapes, and a program may use either:

  • Percentage of the sale: you get a share of the order value, so bigger baskets pay more.
  • Fixed amount per sale: the same commission whatever the visitor spends, common for subscriptions with one price.

Either way, the sale is usually not final at once. Most programs hold commissions for a period to cover refunds, chargebacks and cancellations, then approve what is left. Read the hold period and what counts as a valid sale before you promote.

A worked example

Illustration only, the rate and prices are invented for the maths. A program pays 20% of the sale. Your link sends 2,000 clicks in a month.

  1. 140 visitors buy, a 2% conversion rate.
  2. 2The average order is $30, so sales total $1,200.
  3. 3Your gross commission is 20% ร— $1,200 = $240.
  4. 43 orders are refunded during the hold period: 3 ร— $30 ร— 20% = $18 reversed.
  5. 5Approved commission: $222, an EPC of about $0.11.

That last number is the one to plan with. If this traffic costs you money or hours, compare it with $0.11 per click, not with the 20% headline. See what is EPC.

CPS compared with the other models

ModelPays onYour riskUpside
CPLA free sign-upLowSmall, fixed
CPAAn agreed action, often a first payment or depositMediumFixed per action
CPSEach purchaseHighGrows with order value
RevShareA share of what the customer spends over timeHigh at firstGrows with customer lifetime

CPS and CPA overlap: a CPA deal whose action is "first purchase" is effectively CPS. The real difference from RevShare is time. CPS usually pays on the first sale only; RevShare keeps paying while the customer stays. See CPA vs RevShare and customer lifetime value.

When CPS suits your traffic

  • High intent audiences: people already searching for or comparing a product buy more often.
  • Trust-based channels: reviews, tutorials and communities where your recommendation carries weight.
  • Products with repeat value where the merchant counts later purchases too (check the cookie duration).

Cold, broad traffic usually performs badly on CPS: lots of clicks, few buyers. For that traffic a lead or click-based deal, or a hybrid, often earns more per hour.

Common CPS mistakes

  • Counting pending commissions as income. Plan with approved amounts.
  • Ignoring the refund rate. Traffic that buys on impulse and refunds is worse than it looks.
  • Choosing by commission percentage alone. 30% of a product nobody buys is zero.
  • Misleading promises to push a sale. They raise refunds, break advertising rules and end deals.

FAQ

What does cost per sale mean?+

A pricing model where the merchant pays the affiliate only when a referred visitor completes a purchase.

Is CPS the same as CPA?+

Not exactly. CPA pays for an agreed action, which can be a sale, a deposit or a sign-up. CPS always means a sale. When the CPA action is a purchase, the two are effectively the same.

Why is my commission still pending?+

Most programs hold commissions for a set period to cover refunds and cancellations before approving them. The length is in the program's terms.
