What Is CPL? Cost per Lead and How Lead Deals Really Pay
CPL pays per lead: a sign-up, a form or a registration. What counts as a lead, how CPL compares to CPA and CPS, a worked example, and why lead quality decides whether you keep the deal.
CPL, cost per lead, is a deal where you are paid for each lead you bring: someone who gives their details or creates a free account, without buying anything yet. From the advertiser's side it is what they pay per lead; from yours it is what you earn per lead.
CPL sits between paying for clicks and paying for sales. The action is easier than a purchase, so it converts more often, but each one pays less, and programs watch lead quality closely.
What counts as a lead
The program defines it, and the definition is the most important line of the deal. Common ones:
- Single opt-in: an email or phone entered in a form.
- Double opt-in: the person also confirms by clicking a link in the email.
- Free registration: an account created, sometimes with a verified email or phone.
- Qualified lead: a registration that also passes a check, such as country, age or a completed profile.
The stricter the definition, the higher the payout per lead and the fewer leads you will count. Always compare deals by what you would earn per 1,000 clicks, not by the payout headline.
A worked example
Illustration only. Two offers in the same niche, 1,000 clicks each:
| Offer | Lead type | Leads | Pay per lead | Earned |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Single opt-in | 120 | $0.80 | $96 |
| B | Double opt-in | 45 | $2.50 | $112.50 |
B earns more even though it converts less than half as often. Now add quality: if the program later rejects 30% of A's leads as junk, A falls to about $67. Rejections are where CPL deals are won or lost.
CPL next to CPC, CPA and CPS
| Model | Paid when | Pays per unit | Converts |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPC | Someone clicks | Lowest | Most often |
| CPL | Someone signs up free | Low to medium | Often |
| CPA | Someone takes the agreed action (often a deposit or first payment) | Medium to high | Less often |
| CPS | Someone buys | Highest | Least often |
CPA is a broad term, and some programs use it for leads too, so read the definition. For sales, see cost per sale; for the full comparison of fixed versus share deals, see CPA vs RevShare.
Why lead quality decides everything
Advertisers buy leads because some of them become customers. If your leads never do, the program cuts your payout, rejects leads or ends the deal. Good CPL promoters think one step past the lead.
- Promote to people who could actually want the product, not to anyone who will fill a form.
- Be clear about what they are signing up for. Surprise sign-ups don't convert later.
- Never use incentives the program doesn't allow, such as paying people to register.
Timing matters too. Many programs review leads days or weeks after they arrive, so the number on your dashboard today is not final. Keep a note of pending versus approved leads per placement, and judge a new source only once its first batch has been reviewed. A source that looks great while pending and collapses after review is worse than one that grows slowly.
Common CPL mistakes
- Comparing payouts instead of earnings per 1,000 clicks.
- Ignoring the rejection rate in the program's report.
- Fake or forced leads. They are fraud, they get caught and they cost you the account. See affiliate fraud explained.
With AMZA, deal type and terms are agreed per promoter, and your Wingman reads lead quality with you, not just lead count.
FAQ
What is CPL in marketing?+
Cost per lead: a pricing model where the advertiser pays for each lead, such as a free sign-up or a filled form, rather than for clicks or sales.
What is the difference between CPL and CPA?+
CPL pays for a lead that hasn't bought anything. CPA pays for an agreed action, often a purchase or first deposit, though some programs use CPA for leads too.
Why were my leads rejected?+
Usually because they didn't meet the program's definition: wrong country, unconfirmed email, duplicates, or traffic that looked low quality.
