Affiliate Cookie Duration Explained: How Long You Get Credit

What affiliate cookie duration means, how attribution windows work, what happens with a late buyer, other devices or another promoter's link, and how much cookie length should matter to you.

When someone clicks your affiliate link, the program remembers that you sent them. How long it remembers is the cookie duration, also called the attribution window. If they buy inside that window, you get the credit. If they buy after it closes, you usually don't.

It sounds technical, but it has a direct effect on how much of your traffic you get paid for, especially when people don't buy on the first visit.

How a tracking cookie works

  1. 1A person clicks your tracking link.
  2. 2The program records the click and stores a small marker, often a cookie in their browser, with your ID.
  3. 3If they come back and complete the qualifying action, the program reads the marker and credits you.
  4. 4Once the window ends, the marker no longer counts.

Modern tracking often mixes browser cookies with other methods, such as server-side records tied to a sign-up. How tracking links work explains the mechanics further.

Short vs long windows

Window lengthGood forRisk for you
Session or 24 hoursImpulse offers, quick decisionsAnyone who thinks it over is lost
About a weekOffers people compare brieflyWeekend browsers may slip out
30 days or moreConsidered purchasesFew, if attribution is honest
Lifetime (revshare)Ongoing spending tied to the first sign-upMostly about the first conversion

These are typical shapes, not quotes from any program. Always read your program's own terms for the exact window.

Situations that cost promoters credit

  • Another device: someone clicks on their phone and buys on a laptop. Browser cookies alone may miss it.
  • Cleared cookies or private browsing: the marker can be lost before they come back.
  • Another promoter's link: many programs use last-click attribution, so whoever's link was clicked last gets the credit.
  • In-app browsers: social apps open links in their own browser, which may not share cookies with the person's main browser.

How much should cookie length matter to you?

It matters most when your audience takes time to decide. Long-form content, comparisons and owned channels tend to produce delayed buyers, so a longer window protects you. For impulse offers promoted with short video, most conversions happen fast and the window matters less.

Don't choose a program on cookie length alone. Fit, payout model and reliable payment still come first, as covered in how to choose an affiliate program. Treat cookie length as a tiebreaker between otherwise similar deals.

Questions to ask your program

  1. 1How long is the attribution window?
  2. 2Is it last click, first click or something else?
  3. 3Do you track across devices, for example by account sign-up?
  4. 4On revshare, does the customer stay mine for their lifetime once they sign up?
  5. 5How do I see clicks that haven't converted yet?

Then tag each source with the tracking link builder so you know which ones produce fast buyers and which produce slow ones. AMZA's Wingman explains how attribution works on each program before you start, so the window is never a surprise. Terms like attribution and last click are also in the glossary.

FAQ

What is cookie duration in affiliate marketing?+

The length of time after a click during which a program will still credit you for a conversion. It's also called the attribution window.

What happens if someone buys after the cookie expires?+

Usually you don't get credit for that conversion, unless the program tracks the customer another way, such as a sign-up tied to your link.

Is a longer affiliate cookie always better?+

It's better for you as a promoter, but it isn't the most important term. Offer fit, payout model and reliable payment matter more.

Who gets credit if two affiliates send the same buyer?+

It depends on the program's attribution model. Many use last click, so the most recent affiliate link clicked before the purchase wins.
