How Affiliate Payouts Work: From Click to Money in Your Account

What happens between a click and a payout: tracking, pending and confirmed earnings, hold periods, reversals, minimum balances and payment methods, explained in plain English for promoters.

Your dashboard says you made money today. Your bank says you didn't. Both are right, because a commission travels through several stages before it becomes cash.

Knowing those stages stops panic over 'missing' money and helps you plan how much you can reinvest in content, tools or paid traffic each week.

The life of a commission

  1. 1Click: someone taps your tracking link and the program records it, with your sub-ID if you added one.
  2. 2Conversion: they complete the qualifying action, such as a subscription, a first deposit or a purchase.
  3. 3Pending: the commission appears, but it can still be reversed.
  4. 4Confirmed: the hold period is over and the commission is safe.
  5. 5Invoiced or paid: the confirmed balance is sent on the next payment date, if it is above the minimum.

If any of these steps is unclear, how tracking links work covers the first two in detail.

Why there is a hold period

Programs hold commissions for a while because some sales don't stick. A buyer asks for a refund, a card payment is charged back, or a conversion turns out to be fraud. The hold gives the program time to see that before money leaves.

Reason a commission is reversedWhat it looks likeCan you prevent it?
RefundBuyer gets money back in the windowPartly, with honest promotion
ChargebackBank reverses a card paymentPartly, avoid misleading claims
FraudFake or self-made conversionsYes, by using clean traffic only
Rule breachTraffic from a banned sourceYes, by reading the terms
DuplicateThe same buyer counted twiceNo, the program fixes it

How the payout model changes the timing

With CPA, you earn once per qualifying action, so a commission usually moves from pending to confirmed in one go. With revshare, you earn a share of what the customer spends over time, so new money keeps appearing month after month from old referrals. Hybrids mix both.

Revshare can make early weeks look slow and later months look much better. That's why CPA vs revshare matters for cash flow, not only for total earnings.

Schedules, minimums and methods

  • Schedule: weekly, twice a month or monthly. Weekly gives you money to reinvest faster.
  • Minimum payout: a balance threshold below which the program waits until next time.
  • Method: bank transfer, e-wallet or crypto, depending on the program and your country. Fees differ per method.
  • Currency: if you are paid in a currency you don't spend, conversion costs come off the top.
  • Paperwork: many programs need your details and sometimes a tax form before the first payment.

Write your program's schedule into your own calendar. When a payment is late, you'll know straight away instead of wondering whether it was due.

Keep your own simple ledger

Don't rely only on the program's dashboard. A plain spreadsheet with four columns is enough: date, source, pending amount, confirmed amount. Add the payment date when money arrives. After a month you will see your real reversal rate and how long cash really takes to reach you.

This ledger also makes affiliate income taxes easier, because you already have a record of what arrived and when. AMZA pays weekly and your Wingman goes through the week's numbers with you, which makes keeping that ledger quick.

FAQ

What does pending commission mean?+

It means a conversion was recorded but can still be reversed, for example by a refund or a fraud check. It becomes confirmed after the program's hold period.

Why was my affiliate commission reversed?+

The usual reasons are refunds, chargebacks, suspected fraud, duplicates or traffic from a source the program doesn't allow. Ask the program which one applied.

How often do affiliates get paid?+

It depends on the program: weekly, twice a month and monthly are all common. Check the schedule and the minimum payout before you start.

Do I need to invoice an affiliate program?+

Some programs pay automatically, others ask for an invoice or a payment request. Their terms will say which, and what details they need.
