Twitter (X) Communities: How Promoters Can Use Them Without Getting Kicked Out
What Twitter (X) Communities are, how they differ from your normal feed, how to find ones that fit your offer, how to post so admins keep you and how to measure what Communities bring.
Communities on X are groups built around a topic, run by their own admins and moderators, with their own rules. Posts shared to a Community go to its members, who chose to be there because they care about that topic.
For promoters, that sounds like a shortcut to a targeted audience, and sometimes it is. But Communities work more like small forums than like your feed. Treat them like an ad board and you get removed fast.
How Communities differ from your feed
| Your normal posts | Community posts | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees it first | Your followers and the For You feed | Community members |
| Rules | X's rules | X's rules plus the Community's own |
| Who can remove it | X | X, plus the Community's admins and moderators |
| Audience fit | Mixed | Focused on one topic |
| Tone | Your own | Expected to match the group |
How far Community posts reach outside the group, and the exact features available, have changed over time. Check X's current help pages on Communities for how visibility works today.
Finding Communities that fit
- 1Search for your niche words in X's Communities section, plus related interests your audience has.
- 2Look at what accounts in your niche have joined or post in.
- 3Open each Community and read its rules and description before joining.
- 4Check activity: recent posts, replies and whether admins are active.
- 5Note which Communities allow promotion, which allow it only in certain ways, and which don't at all.
How to post so admins keep you
- Participate first. Reply to others and post something useful before you ever promote.
- Follow the topic. Off-topic posts are the main reason people get removed.
- Respect promotion rules. If the rules say no links, don't post links.
- Make posts for the group. Write something that makes sense to that audience, not a copy of your feed post.
- Don't post the same thing in many Communities at once. It looks like spam to admins and to X.
For 18+ accounts, only join Communities whose rules clearly allow that content, and keep media marked as sensitive as described in X sensitive media settings.
Measuring what Communities bring
Communities can be great for engagement but weak for clicks, or the other way round. Use a separate tracking link from the tracking link builder for each Community where links are allowed, and note profile visits and new followers after posting there.
After a few weeks, keep the Communities that bring real results and leave the rest. A short, active list is easier to keep up and keeps your posts from looking like spam.
Mistakes that get promoters removed
- Joining twenty Communities on day one and posting the same thing in all of them.
- Posting only links or promotion, never replying to anyone else.
- Arguing with admins after a removal instead of asking what to change.
- Posting 18+ media in a Community that doesn't allow it, or without marking it sensitive.
- Messaging members privately with promotion. Unwanted DMs are spam on X and get reported fast.
If you're removed from a Community, accept it and move on. Rejoining with another account to get back in is ban evasion and puts your main account at risk.
