Why Was My Reddit Post Removed? Causes and How to Fix Each One
Why your Reddit post was removed: moderator removal, AutoModerator, Reddit's spam filters or a shadowban. How to tell which one it was in a minute and what to fix so it stops happening.
A removed post is one of the most common and most confusing things on Reddit. Sometimes you get a message. Often you get nothing: the post looks fine to you, but nobody else can see it.
There are four main reasons a post disappears. Each has a different fix, so the first step is working out which one happened.
The four ways a post disappears
| Cause | Who did it | Typical sign | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moderator removal | A person moderating that community | Often a reply or message with a reason | One post |
| AutoModerator | The community's automatic rules | Instant removal, sometimes an automatic reply | That community |
| Reddit's spam filters | Reddit itself | Post hidden site-wide, sometimes labelled as removed by Reddit's filters | Post or account |
| Shadowban or suspension | Reddit itself | Nothing you post shows to others | Whole account |
How to tell which one it was
- 1Check your inbox and the post's comments. A moderator or AutoModerator reply usually explains the reason.
- 2Open the community's New feed while logged out or in a private window. If your post is missing, it was removed or filtered.
- 3Open your profile while logged out. If the profile doesn't load or shows nothing, it may be a site-wide problem. Our shadowban guide walks through it.
- 4Check if the post shows in other communities. If posts survive elsewhere, the problem is that one community's rules.
The most common reasons behind removals
- Account too new or too little karma for that community's minimum.
- Missing flair, tag or title format that the rules require.
- A link where links aren't allowed, or a link to a domain the community or Reddit blocks.
- Posting too often in the same community, or the same post in many communities at once.
- Not verified in a community that requires verification. See Reddit verification posts explained.
- Content that breaks the rules: off-topic, reposted, watermarked when the community bans watermarks, or not original.
How to fix it, cause by cause
Moderator removal: read the reason, fix it, and don't repost the same thing straight away. If it isn't clear, send one polite modmail asking what to change. Never argue or message individual moderators.
AutoModerator: find the rule you missed, usually karma, age, flair or a keyword. Reddit AutoModerator explained covers how these filters think.
Reddit's filters: slow down, stop posting the same link everywhere, and make sure the domain you link to isn't seen as spam. Build normal activity on the account, like comments, between promotional posts.
Shadowban or suspension: stop posting and use Reddit's official appeal. Don't create a new account to keep posting; that's ban evasion and makes things worse.
Stop removals before they happen
Keep a sheet of every community with its rules, minimums and your last post date. Test each new community with one post and check it logged out. Warm up new accounts properly with the account warm-up plan. Most removals come from skipping one of these steps, not from bad luck.
FAQ
Why was my Reddit post removed without a message?+
Usually AutoModerator or Reddit's spam filters removed it, and neither always sends a message. Check the community's New feed while logged out to confirm it's gone, then check that community's rules.
Can I repost a removed Reddit post?+
Only after fixing the reason. Reposting the same thing straight away usually gets it removed again, and repeated attempts can get you banned from the community.
How do I appeal a removed post?+
For a community removal, send a short modmail to that community's moderators. For a site-wide action by Reddit, use Reddit's official appeal form.
Does deleting and reposting help?+
Not if the cause isn't fixed. Deleting and reposting often looks like spam and can make filters stricter for your account.
