Reddit Shadowban: How to Check It and What to Do
How to tell if your Reddit account is shadowbanned or just filtered by a community, how to check it in a minute, why it happens and what to do next, including the appeal.
You post, and nothing happens: no upvotes, no comments, nothing. Either your post was filtered by one community, or your whole account is shadowbanned: you can see your activity, but nobody else can.
The two need different fixes, so the first job is telling them apart.
Shadowban, filter or removal?
| What happened | Who it affects | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Site-wide shadowban | Your whole account | Your profile shows "page not found" when logged out |
| Community filter (AutoModerator) | One community | Your post is missing from that community's New |
| Moderator removal | One post | Often a removal message or reply |
| Account suspension | Your whole account | A banner saying the account is suspended |
How to check in one minute
- 1Open a private (incognito) window where you are not logged in.
- 2Go to reddit.com/user/your-username.
- 3If you see "page not found" or "nobody on Reddit goes by that name", the account is shadowbanned.
- 4If the profile shows, open the community you posted in, sort by New, and look for your post. Missing there but visible on your profile = filtered by that community.
Why it happens
- A brand-new account posting links straight away.
- The same link or text posted across many communities quickly.
- Several accounts from one device or IP, especially if one was banned before.
- Voting or commenting patterns that look automated.
What to do next
- Shadowban: appeal once through Reddit's official appeal form, honestly. While you wait, don't create a copy from the same setup.
- Community filter: check that community's rules for karma, account age or verification, build those up, or message the moderators politely.
- Removal: read the removal reason and the rules, and post something that fits next time.
Set up so it doesn't happen again
- 1Warm every new account for at least a week before any link. The warm-up plan has the steps.
- 2Give every account its own device profile and connection, never shared with a banned account.
- 3Post different titles in different communities instead of one copy everywhere.
- 4Keep your posting pace steady: a few posts a day, spread out.
- 5Check your profile while logged out once a week, so you catch a problem early.
Most shadowbans come from the first days of an account or from a link to another banned account. A clean setup and a slow start avoid almost all of them.
FAQ
How long does a Reddit shadowban last?+
Site-wide shadowbans usually last until an appeal is accepted. Community filters last until you meet that community's requirements.
Can I see my own posts when shadowbanned?+
Yes, that is what makes it a shadowban. Check while logged out to see what others see.
Does deleting posts lift a shadowban?+
No. Appeal through Reddit's official form and fix the behaviour that caused it.
Can a whole community be hidden from me?+
Communities can ban you individually, which you'll usually be told about. That is separate from a site-wide shadowban.
