What Is CPM? Cost per Thousand Impressions Explained for Promoters
CPM is the price of 1,000 ad impressions. How it is calculated, when buying on CPM makes sense, how it compares to CPC and CPA, and the mistakes that burn a test budget.
CPM means cost per mille: the price you pay for 1,000 impressions of an ad, a post or a placement, whether anyone clicks or not. "Mille" is Latin for thousand. It is the oldest pricing model in advertising and still the default on most display networks, social ad platforms and many Telegram channel sales.
For a promoter, CPM matters in two ways. When you buy traffic, it tells you what attention costs. When you compare channels, it lets you put a shoutout, a banner and a sponsored post on the same scale. What CPM never tells you on its own is whether that attention turns into money.
How CPM is calculated
The formula is simple: CPM = cost ÷ impressions × 1,000. If you know the CPM and want the cost, flip it: cost = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000.
- An impression is one time the ad was shown. One person scrolling past twice can count as two.
- Platforms define a "view" differently. Some count an impression the moment the ad loads, others only when half of it was on screen for a second.
- On Telegram and newsletters, sellers often quote a price per post. Divide by the views the post usually gets to find the real CPM.
A worked example
Illustration only, the numbers are made up to show the maths. You buy a post in a Telegram channel for $60 and it gets 12,000 views.
- 1CPM = $60 ÷ 12,000 × 1,000 = $5.
- 2The post brings 180 clicks. Your click-through rate is 180 ÷ 12,000 = 1.5%.
- 3Your effective cost per click is $60 ÷ 180 = $0.33.
- 4If 6 of those clicks convert, your cost per result is $10. That is the number you compare with what a result earns.
A second channel might sell at a $3 CPM but get only 0.4% CTR. Its cost per click is then $0.75, more than double. Cheap impressions are not cheap traffic. Our guide on cost per click goes deeper into that second step.
CPM next to the other pricing models
| Model | You pay for | Who carries the risk | Good when |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPM | 1,000 impressions | The buyer | Your creative has a proven CTR |
| CPC | Each click | Shared | You trust your landing page more than your ad |
| CPL | Each lead (sign-up, form) | Mostly the seller | Lead quality is checked |
| CPA / CPS | Each sale or action | The seller | The seller trusts the offer converts |
The further down the table, the more risk moves away from the buyer and the higher the unit price gets. That is why CPM is cheapest per unit and riskiest per result.
When buying on CPM makes sense
- You already know your CTR and conversion rate from earlier tests, so you can predict the cost per result.
- The audience is a tight match (a niche channel, a specific community), so most impressions reach the right people.
- You are testing creatives and want a fixed, small cost per thousand to compare them fairly.
Common CPM mistakes
- Judging a buy by CPM alone. A low CPM with no clicks is the most expensive traffic there is.
- Trusting quoted views. Ask for screenshots of recent posts, not the channel's best one.
- Using one link for every buy. Without a separate tracking link per placement you can't tell which buy worked. Build them with the tracking link builder.
- Ignoring frequency. Ten impressions on the same person are not ten new people.
At AMZA, your Wingman reads paid placements by cost per result, not by CPM, and will tell you which buys to repeat.
FAQ
What is a good CPM?+
There is no universal number. It depends on the platform, the country and the audience. A good CPM is one where your CTR and conversion rate turn it into a cost per result below what a result earns you.
What does CPM stand for?+
Cost per mille, meaning cost per thousand impressions. "Mille" is Latin for thousand.
Is CPM or CPC better for a beginner?+
Usually CPC, because you only pay when someone clicks. CPM rewards buyers who already know their creative gets clicks.
How do I convert a price per post into CPM?+
Divide the price by the views a typical post gets, then multiply by 1,000. A $40 post with 8,000 views is a $5 CPM.
