Cost Per Click (CPC) Explained: What You Pay and What It's Worth

What cost per click means, how to calculate CPC and earnings per click, the break-even CPC for paid traffic and shoutouts, and what pushes your cost per click up or down.

Cost per click (CPC) is how much you pay, on average, for one click on your link. It matters as soon as you pay for traffic in any form: ads, shoutouts, boosted posts or paid placements.

On its own, CPC tells you almost nothing. A cheap click that never converts is expensive; a pricey click from the right buyer can be a bargain. What matters is CPC next to what a click earns you.

How to calculate CPC and EPC

CPC = what you spent รท clicks you got. EPC (earnings per click) = what you earned รท clicks. Compare the two: if EPC is above CPC, the traffic pays for itself.

IllustrationSpendClicksCPCEarnedEPCResult
Shoutout A$50250$0.20$40$0.16Loses $10
Shoutout B$50100$0.50$90$0.90Makes $40

These numbers are made up. Notice that the most expensive clicks, from shoutout B, were the most profitable. Judging only on CPC would have picked the wrong one.

Your break-even CPC

The most useful number before you buy traffic is your break-even CPC: the most you can pay per click without losing money. It equals your EPC on similar traffic. If your organic Reddit traffic earns a certain amount per click, a paid source would need to earn at least as well per click, at a lower CPC, to be worth it.

  1. 1Find your EPC from at least a few hundred tracked clicks.
  2. 2Subtract a margin for tools and your time, so you're not working for nothing.
  3. 3That's the highest CPC you can pay.
  4. 4Test any paid source small, and stop if its CPC is above that line after enough clicks.

What pushes CPC up or down

  • Competition: more advertisers chasing the same audience push ad prices up.
  • Audience and country: some audiences cost more to reach than others.
  • Creative quality: on many ad platforms, content people engage with tends to get cheaper clicks.
  • Placement: a shoutout from a big, engaged page costs more per click than a small, quiet one, but may convert better.
  • Click quality: fake or accidental clicks make CPC look cheap and EPC look terrible.

Paid traffic rules to know

Ad platforms have strict policies on adult and gambling content. Many don't allow them at all, or only with licences, age targeting and approvals. Read the policy before you spend, don't try to sneak restricted offers past review, and never use misleading ads. For buying from other accounts, how to buy shoutouts covers how to check a page is real before you pay.

Bought clicks from bots are worse than no clicks: they waste money and can get your tracking flagged as fraud. See affiliate fraud explained for the warning signs.

Track it properly

Give every paid source its own tagged link with the tracking link builder, log the spend next to it, and compare CPC and EPC weekly. Media buying explained goes further into running paid traffic as a habit rather than a gamble. When a promoter at AMZA wants to try paid traffic, the Wingman helps read these two numbers side by side before the budget grows.

FAQ

What is a good cost per click?+

Any CPC below what a click earns you. A good CPC for one offer can be a loss on another, so compare it with your own earnings per click.

What is the difference between CPC and EPC?+

CPC is what you pay per click. EPC is what you earn per click. When EPC is higher than CPC, the traffic is profitable.

How do I lower my cost per click?+

Improve the content people see, target the right audience, test placements and cut sources with fake or low-quality clicks. Lower CPC only helps if conversion holds up.
