How to Pay Social Media Assistants and Posters in a Promotion Team
Hourly, per account, fixed plus bonus or a share of results: how to pay social media assistants fairly, what each model rewards, how to avoid paying for spam, and what to agree in writing.
How you pay people shapes how they work. Pay per post and you get many posts. Pay only on results and good people leave during a slow month. The right structure rewards the work you actually want: clean, steady posting that earns.
This is general information about pay models, not legal or tax advice. Rules on contractors, employees and payments differ by country, so ask a professional where you and your team live.
The common pay models
| Model | Rewards | Risk | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hourly | Time spent | Slow work, padding hours | Training, research tasks |
| Per post | Volume | Spam, rule breaks | Rarely a good idea alone |
| Per account per week | Looking after accounts | Accounts kept but not grown | Steady posting roles |
| Fixed + bonus | Reliability plus results | Bonus set too low to matter | Most posters |
| Share of results | Earnings | Unstable income, short-cuts | Experienced, trusted people |
Why fixed plus bonus works for most teams
A fixed part pays for the routine work: posting on plan, replying, logging. A bonus on results gives a reason to care whether posts actually get clicks. Here is an illustration with made-up numbers, just to show the shape:
- Fixed: an agreed weekly amount for running three accounts to the SOP.
- Bonus: an agreed amount for every 100 tracked clicks above a baseline, or a small share of conversions on their links.
- Quality gate: no bonus in a week with a rule break that got an account limited.
The quality gate matters. Without it, a bonus on clicks can push people to cut corners. Results only count when they come from clean work.
You can only pay on what you can measure
Result-based pay needs a tracked link per poster or per account. Build them with the tracking link builder and read how tracking links work if this is new. Write down where the numbers come from (the program's dashboard, your tracking spreadsheet) before the first payday, so there is never a fight about whose number is right.
When and how to pay
- 1Pick a fixed payday and never miss it. Weekly or every two weeks works well for posters.
- 2Send a short statement with each payment: fixed part, bonus, how the bonus was counted.
- 3Use a payment method that leaves a record and suits their country.
- 4Pay a bonus only after the source numbers are final (for example after the program's own weekly close).
- 5Keep every statement; you will want them at tax time.
Your own payouts set the limit here: you can't promise posters weekly bonuses on money you are paid monthly. See CPA vs revshare for how program payouts are usually structured.
What to agree in writing
- The role, accounts and hours.
- The pay model, payday and payment method.
- How bonuses are counted and what cancels them.
- Training pay and its length.
- Notice on both sides, and that all accounts and logins stay with you when they leave.
- Confidentiality about accounts, links and numbers.
Review pay every few months. A poster who now runs six accounts well should not still be on the rate you agreed when they ran one.
FAQ
Should I pay social media assistants hourly or per post?+
Hourly suits training and research. Per post alone tends to reward spam. For ongoing posting, a fixed amount per account or per week plus a results bonus usually works better.
How do I pay a commission to my posters fairly?+
Give each poster their own tracked links, agree in writing how the commission is counted and from which numbers, and send a statement with every payment.
How often should I pay my promotion team?+
Weekly or every two weeks is common and keeps people motivated. Pick a fixed day and stick to it.
Should a bonus be cancelled when an account gets banned?+
Agree it in advance. A common approach is that a week with a rule break that got an account limited or banned pays the fixed part only. A ban that clearly wasn't the poster's doing shouldn't cost them anything.
