What Is a Postback URL? Server-to-Server Tracking Explained

A postback URL lets an offer's server tell your tracker about a conversion directly. How S2S tracking works, the click ID that ties it together, an example and the usual errors.

A postback URL is an address on your tracker that the offer's server calls when a conversion happens. Instead of relying on the visitor's browser, the two servers talk directly. That is why it is also called server-to-server, or S2S, tracking.

Postbacks are the most reliable way to track affiliate conversions, and they are the standard for paid traffic and serious volume. You don't need to be technical to use them, but you do need to understand the one thing that makes them work: the click ID.

How a postback works, step by step

  1. 1A visitor clicks your link. Your tracker creates a unique click ID (for example `abc123`) and adds it to the offer link.
  2. 2The offer's system stores that click ID with the visitor's session.
  3. 3The visitor converts. The offer's server calls your postback URL and puts the stored click ID into it.
  4. 4Your tracker receives the call, finds click `abc123`, and records a conversion against the exact ad, post or placement that produced it.

No cookie in the visitor's browser is involved in the final step, so blockers, browser privacy settings and app switching don't break it, as long as the click ID survived the first hop.

What a postback URL looks like

A typical one: `https://track.example.com/postback?clickid={clickid}&payout={payout}&status={status}`. The parts in braces are macros: placeholders the offer's server replaces with real values at the moment of conversion.

MacroFilled withWhy it matters
{clickid}The click ID you passed inTies the conversion to one click
{payout}What the conversion earnedLets your tracker show revenue, not just counts
{status}Approved, pending or rejectedKeeps your numbers honest after reviews
{event}Lead, sale, deposit…Separates steps of the funnel

Each program names its macros differently. Copy them from its documentation, never guess.

A worked example

Illustration only. You run two creatives on a paid placement, each with its own sub ID. Over a week the tracker logs 1,000 clicks per creative.

  • Creative A: 22 postbacks, 3 later marked rejected, 19 approved.
  • Creative B: 30 postbacks, 12 rejected, 18 approved.

B looked better on raw count. Once the status macro reports rejections, A is ahead and B's traffic looks low quality. Without a status-aware postback you would have scaled the wrong one.

Common postback mistakes

  • The click ID gets lost because a shortener or redirect strips URL parameters. Test the full chain once before spending.
  • Wrong macro names, so the tracker receives the literal text `{clickid}`.
  • No status handling, so rejected conversions stay counted as wins.
  • Firing the postback on every step without an event name, so a sign-up and a sale look the same.

FAQ

What is a postback URL in affiliate marketing?+

An address on your tracker that the offer's server calls when a conversion happens, passing back the click ID so the tracker knows which click converted.

Is postback tracking better than a pixel?+

It is more reliable, because it doesn't depend on the visitor's browser or cookies. It needs a little more setup on both sides.

What is a click ID?+

A unique code your tracker creates for each click. It travels with the visitor to the offer and comes back in the postback.

Why is my postback not firing?+

Most often the click ID didn't reach the offer, the macros are spelled wrong, or the program hasn't saved your postback URL. Test with one manual conversion.
