TikTok Hashtag Strategy: How Many, Which Ones and Why

How hashtags really work on TikTok today, how to pick a small set that describes your video, which tags to avoid on promotion accounts, and how to test them properly.

Hashtags won't make a weak TikTok go viral, and stuffing thirty of them won't help either. What they do is tell TikTok, and searchers, what your video is about.

That's the whole strategy in one line: use a few accurate tags that describe the video and the audience you want. The rest of this guide is how to choose them.

What hashtags actually do

TikTok understands videos from many signals: what's said and shown, the on-screen text, the caption, the sound and how viewers react. Hashtags are one of those signals. They help most when the video is new and TikTok is still working out who to show it to, and when people search a topic.

Hashtag typeExample shapeUse it?
Topic tag#skincareroutine, #gymmotivationYes, 1โ€“2 that describe the video
Audience / niche tag#nightshiftlife, #indiemusicYes, the people you want
Huge generic tag#fyp, #viralAdds little, harmless at best
Trend / challenge tagThe tag of a current trendOnly if your video joins that trend
Unrelated popular tagA trending tag that has nothing to do with youNo, it confuses who sees it

How many hashtags to use

There's no magic number, and TikTok's own advice has shifted over time. A practical default is three to five relevant tags. Fewer is fine if the caption and video are already clear. More rarely helps, and a wall of tags makes the caption look spammy.

Also remember that TikTok reads more than tags. Saying the topic out loud in the first seconds and putting a keyword in the on-screen text often does more for search than any hashtag. Treat tags as the label on the box, and the video itself as what's inside.

Finding the right tags in ten minutes

  1. 1Type your topic into TikTok search and look at the suggestions that autocomplete.
  2. 2Open the top videos for that search and note which tags they share.
  3. 3Check tag pages: is the content there similar to yours? If not, the tag is wrong for you.
  4. 4Pick one broad topic tag, one or two narrower ones, and one audience tag.
  5. 5Save the set in your notes per content format so you don't reinvent it every time.

TikTok also offers a trend and hashtag view for advertisers (its Creative Center). Features and availability change, so check what's currently offered in your country.

Tags to avoid on promotion accounts

  • Anything sexual or adult-coded. Even if your offer is 18+, the TikTok side must stay clean and within the guidelines.
  • Gambling tags, unless you are promoting a licensed brand where it's legal and TikTok's rules allow it.
  • Tags tied to banned or restricted topics. Some tags show no results; that's a sign to stay away.
  • Other creators' names or brands you don't represent.
  • The same giant block of tags pasted on every video.

Testing whether tags matter for you

Run the same format with two tag sets for a week each, keeping hooks and timing similar. In analytics, look at the traffic source split: if search traffic rises with one set, those tags are helping. If nothing changes, stop worrying about tags and put that time into hooks and editing, where the big gains usually are. FAQ

Do hashtags still work on TikTok?+

They help TikTok and searchers understand the video, especially when it's new. They're a small factor compared with watch time and the content itself.

Does #fyp help you get on the For You page?+

There's no evidence it gives a real boost. It's harmless, but a descriptive tag is more useful.

Should I put hashtags in comments instead of the caption?+

Put them in the caption, where TikTok reads them with the video. Tags in comments don't do the same job.
