A/B Testing for Affiliates: How to Split Test Without Fooling Yourself

How affiliates can A/B test hooks, captions, bio links and landing pages: one change at a time, enough data, fair comparisons, and how to read results without being fooled by luck.

A/B testing, also called split testing, means showing two versions of something to similar people and keeping the one that performs better. Version A is what you do now; version B changes one thing.

It sounds simple, and it is, but most promoters run tests that can't give a real answer. They change three things at once, compare a Monday against a Saturday, or call a winner after forty clicks. Here is how to do it properly.

What affiliates can test

Thing to testExample A vs BMetric to judge it
HookQuestion opening vs bold statementWatch time or view-through
CaptionShort vs story-styleProfile visits, clicks
Call to action'Link in bio' vs a specific reason to clickClick-through rate
Bio textTwo different one-linersProfile-to-click rate
Landing page headlineBenefit vs curiosityPage click-through
OfferTwo offers for the same audienceConfirmed earnings per click

Pick the metric before you start. Judging a hook test on sales is tricky because many things happen between the hook and the sale. Judge each test on the number closest to what you changed. Captions that get clicks has ideas for what to test first.

Five rules for a fair test

  1. 1Change one thing. If B has a new hook and a new caption, you won't know which one mattered.
  2. 2Same conditions. Run A and B at similar times, on similar days, to similar audiences.
  3. 3Separate tracking. Give A and B their own tagged links with the tracking link builder.
  4. 4Decide the size in advance. Choose how many views or clicks you'll wait for before looking.
  5. 5Write it down. Note the date, what changed and the result, so you don't retest the same idea in two months.

How not to be fooled by luck

Small numbers swing wildly. As an illustration: if A gets 3 conversions from 100 clicks and B gets 5, B looks 66% better. But with numbers that small, the next 100 clicks could easily flip it. One or two lucky buyers decide the 'winner'.

  • Wait for dozens of conversions per version, not a handful, before trusting a conversion test.
  • For click tests, wait for hundreds of clicks per version.
  • If the difference is small and the numbers are low, call it a tie and test something bolder.
  • If a result seems too good, run it again. Real winners win twice.

Testing on social platforms

On social media you rarely get a perfect split, because each post is shown to a different audience by the algorithm. Work around it by posting A and B alternately over a week or two, so both get a mix of days and times. Compare averages rather than single posts.

Stay within each platform's rules while testing. Posting near-identical content many times in a row can look like spam, so vary the content around the one thing you are testing, and keep your normal posting pace. The Reddit and Instagram pages list platform-specific habits.

Make testing a weekly habit

The promoters who improve fastest always have one test running. Pick one thing each week, run it, record it, keep the winner as your new A, and start the next test. Over a few months those small wins stack up into a very different conversion rate.

AMZA's Wingman reviews numbers with each promoter weekly, which is a natural moment to decide the next test. If you work alone, block twenty minutes on the same day each week to do the same.

Can I A/B test on TikTok or Reddit?+
