Reddit Post Titles That Get Upvotes: What Works and Why
How to write Reddit post titles that get upvotes and clicks: the patterns that work, what each community expects, mistakes that get posts removed and a simple way to test titles.
On Reddit the title does most of the work. In most feeds people see a thumbnail and a line of text, and they decide in about a second whether to stop. A good image with a flat title gets scrolled past. A plain image with a title that feels like a real person talking often wins.
There is no magic formula, but there are patterns. This guide covers the ones that work, the ones that get you removed, and a way to find out what works in your own communities.
What a good Reddit title does
A title that gets upvotes usually does three things at once:
- 1Sounds like a person, not an ad. Reddit users are allergic to marketing language. "Check out my page" reads like spam. A casual sentence reads like a member.
- 2Fits the community. Each subreddit has its own tone and inside jokes. A title that works in one feels wrong in another.
- 3Gives a reason to react. A question, an opinion, a small story or a light challenge invites comments, and comments push posts up.
Title patterns that tend to work
| Pattern | Why it works | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| A question to the reader | Invites comments | The community likes to chat |
| A small personal moment | Feels real and human | Content is casual or everyday |
| An honest opinion | People agree or argue | Discussion communities |
| Plain description | Clear, no bait | Strict communities that ban clickbait |
| Community's own format | Moderators expect it | Rules require tags like [F], [OC] or flair |
Keep titles short enough to read at a glance. Long titles get cut off on mobile, and most Reddit traffic is mobile.
Title mistakes that cost you
- Links, prices or calls to action in the title. Many communities remove these automatically.
- All caps and emoji strings. They look like spam to both people and filters.
- Missing required tags. If the rules say titles must start with a tag, AutoModerator will remove posts without it. See Reddit AutoModerator explained.
- The same title everywhere. Posting one title in twenty communities is a classic spam signal. Write each one fresh.
- Clickbait the post doesn't deliver. People downvote when they feel tricked, and moderators remove it.
How to test titles without guessing
You can't run a real A/B test on one post, but you can learn fast over many posts.
- 1Write down every title you post, the community, the time and the result after 24 hours (upvotes, comments, clicks).
- 2Group titles by pattern: question, story, opinion, plain.
- 3After 20 to 30 posts, compare the groups inside the same community, not across communities.
- 4Use more of what wins, and keep 1 in 5 posts for trying something new.
Clicks matter more than upvotes. Use a separate link per community from the tracking link builder, and read our guide on captions that get clicks for the same ideas on other platforms.
Titles are not the whole story
A great title can't save a post in the wrong community or from an account with no history. Timing, karma and the subreddit list all matter. If titles are fine but posts still die, check the best time to post on Reddit and your community list. Our Reddit page has the wider picture.
FAQ
How long should a Reddit post title be?+
Short enough to read in one glance on a phone. One short sentence usually works best. Very long titles get cut off and look less natural.
Do questions in titles get more upvotes?+
They often get more comments, and comments help a post climb. Whether they get more upvotes depends on the community, so test it in yours.
Can I use the same title in different subreddits?+
It's better not to. Identical titles across many communities look like spam and can get posts filtered. Write a fresh title that fits each community.
Why do my titles get removed?+
Usually a missing required tag, a banned word, a link or price in the title, or a format the community's rules don't allow. Read the rules and pinned posts.
