Instagram Shadowban: How to Check It and Get Your Reach Back
How to check whether Instagram is limiting your reach, using Account Status and recommendation eligibility, why promotion accounts get limited and how to recover cleanly.
Instagram has, over time, given creators more visibility into whether their content can be recommended to people who don't follow them. That's what most people mean by a shadowban: your posts still exist, but they stop reaching new people.
The good part is that you don't have to guess as much as you used to. Here's how to check, what usually causes it on promotion accounts, and how to get reach back.
How to check in two minutes
- 1Open Settings and look for Account Status (on professional accounts it's often also under the professional dashboard).
- 2Check the section about whether your content can be recommended to non-followers.
- 3Look at any removed content or violations listed there.
- 4Open Insights and compare reach from non-followers over the last weeks.
- 5Ask a friend who doesn't follow you to search a hashtag you used on a recent post.
Reading the result
| What you find | What it means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Account Status shows a recommendation problem | Your content isn't shown to non-followers | Fix or remove the listed content, appeal if wrong |
| All clear, but non-follower reach is down | Performance dip, not a limit | Work on hooks, formats, originality |
| Specific posts flagged | Those posts broke a guideline | Remove or edit them |
| Features blocked ("try again later") | An action block | See the [action blocked guide](/blog/instagram-action-blocked-fix) |
Why promotion accounts get limited
- Content that is too suggestive for Instagram's recommendation guidelines, even if it isn't removed.
- Repeated reposts of other people's content or content with other apps' watermarks.
- Engagement bait ("like if…", "comment yes") and misleading captions.
- Growth tricks: follow/unfollow, engagement groups, bought followers.
- Gambling content where it isn't allowed, or without the right authorisation.
- Several accounts on one device or connection, one of them already in trouble.
Recommendation guidelines are stricter than the rules for staying on the platform. A post can be allowed and still not be recommended.
Getting reach back
Start with whatever Account Status lists. Remove or edit those posts and appeal anything you believe was a mistake. Then give the account two to three weeks of clean, original posting: your best format, clearly within the guidelines, no growth tricks.
Meanwhile, keep talking to your existing followers through Stories (see Instagram story ideas). Followers still see your content, so clicks don't stop entirely.
- Week 1: remove flagged posts, appeal once, post one safe Reel a day.
- Week 2: keep posting, check Account Status again, compare non-follower reach.
- Week 3: if reach is back, slowly return to your normal content plan. If not, look harder at what you post, not at the hours.
Don't try to "reset" the account by deleting everything, archiving all posts or switching account types back and forth. None of these are known fixes, and they throw away your history.
Building a setup that stays recommendable
Keep the Instagram side of every funnel clean: show personality and lifestyle, keep anything 18+ off-platform behind the link, and follow each vertical's rules. Use one tracked link (tracking link builder) and a solid link in bio. For the general habits, read how to promote without getting banned. An AMZA Wingman can check new content against platform rules before you post it.
FAQ
Does switching to a personal account remove a shadowban?+
There is no reliable evidence that it does. Fix whatever Account Status lists and post clean content instead of switching account types.
Is the Instagram shadowban real?+
Instagram doesn't use the word, but it does limit which content is recommended to non-followers and shows that in Account Status for many accounts.
How long does an Instagram shadowban last?+
It depends on the cause. Once the problem content is removed or an appeal succeeds, recommendations can return; a performance dip lasts until the content improves.
Do third-party shadowban checkers work?+
They can't see Instagram's internal decisions. Account Status and your own Insights are more reliable.
Can hashtags get me shadowbanned?+
Using tags Instagram restricts, or stuffing unrelated popular tags, can hurt how your posts are shown. Use a few accurate tags and avoid any that show few or no posts.
