Promoters work with a lot of images: teasers, banners, covers, story frames. You rarely need fancy editing. You need the right size, a clean crop, readable text and an export that does not turn sharp into blurry.

This guide covers those basics and the tools that do them.

Sizes that work

UseShapeCommon size
Feed post (Instagram, Threads)Portrait 4:51080 x 1350
Stories, Reels covers, TikTokVertical 9:161080 x 1920
X post imageLandscape 16:9 or square1600 x 900 or 1080 x 1080

Platforms change their displays, so check their help pages now and then. When unsure, a 1080-wide image in the platform's main shape is a safe start.

The edits that matter

  1. 1Crop to the platform's shape, with the subject in the centre third.
  2. 2Light and colour: small changes to brightness and contrast. Less is more.
  3. 3Text: one short line, big, with contrast or a soft shadow behind it.
  4. 4Safe areas: keep text away from the top and bottom of vertical images where the app puts its own buttons.
  5. 5Consistency: the same fonts and colours across an account so people recognise it.

Tool types

  • Phone apps like Snapseed, Lightroom Mobile or the phone's own editor: fast crops and light fixes.
  • Template tools like Canva or Adobe Express: text, layouts and brand kits, good for teams.
  • Desktop editors like Photoshop, Affinity Photo or GIMP: precise work and retouching.
  • Batch tools in Lightroom or similar: one preset applied to many images at once.

These are examples of each type, not recommendations. Check the current pricing and features. For video, see choosing a video editing app.

For a team, a template tool with a shared brand kit often matters more than editing power. When every poster pulls the same fonts, colours and layouts from one place, accounts stay consistent without anyone checking each image by hand. Batch presets do the same job for photos: one look, applied to a whole set in seconds.

Edit honestly

Light and colour fixes are normal. Changing what a product, creator or offer really is crosses a line. Promotion that misleads people breaks platform ad rules and program terms, and people who feel tricked do not convert anyway. Keep edits to presentation: crop, light, text, layout.

Export without losing quality

SettingGood default
FormatJPG for photos, PNG for text-heavy graphics
Width1080 px (or the platform's listed size)
QualityHigh, around 80 to 90 percent for JPG
ColoursRGB
File nameplatform-account-date-01.jpg

Upload the original export, not a screenshot of it. Screenshots and repeated saving add blur each time. If you work with AMZA, your Wingman's weekly content usually arrives ready to crop, so most of your work is resizing per platform.

FAQ

What size should social media images be?+

A safe start is 1080 px wide in the platform's main shape: 1080 x 1350 for feed posts, 1080 x 1920 for stories and vertical video covers, 1280 x 720 for YouTube thumbnails.

What is the easiest app for editing social media images?+

For quick crops and light, your phone's own editor or a free phone app is enough. For text and layouts, a template tool is easiest. Try one of each.

Why do my images look blurry after uploading?+

Usually the export was too small, the image was saved many times, or you uploaded a screenshot. Export once at the right size and upload that file.
