The Affiliate Funnel Explained: From Stranger to Paying Customer
What an affiliate funnel is, the stages from first view to purchase, the number to watch at each stage and how to tell where your funnel leaks, with simple examples for promoters.
A funnel is the path a person takes from first seeing your content to becoming a paying customer of the offer you promote. It's called a funnel because at every step some people drop out: many see, fewer click, fewer still buy.
Thinking in funnel stages stops you from guessing. Instead of 'my promotion isn't working', you can say 'people click but don't sign up', which points straight at the fix.
The four stages of an affiliate funnel
| Stage | What happens | Number to watch | Your main tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attention | Someone sees your post or video | Views, reach | Hooks, posting time, platform fit |
| Interest | They engage or visit your profile | Profile visits, saves, follows | Consistent, useful content |
| Click | They tap your link | Click-through rate | Bio, call to action, link page |
| Conversion | They complete the qualifying action | Conversion rate | Offer fit, landing page |
The terms in the third column are defined in the glossary and explained in more depth in affiliate metrics explained.
A worked example
Here is an illustration with made-up round numbers, just to show the maths. Say a week of posts gets 20,000 views. 2% of viewers visit your profile, which is 400 people. Half of them click your link: 200 clicks. 5% of clicks convert: 10 conversions.
Now ask which stage is easiest to improve. Doubling views is hard. Lifting profile-to-click from 50% to 60% with a clearer bio might be one afternoon of work and gives 240 clicks instead of 200. Small gains at each stage multiply, because every stage feeds the next.
The same logic works in reverse. If one stage suddenly drops, say clicks fall while views stay level, you know the problem sits between those two stages, usually a changed bio, a broken link or a platform hiding your link. You can fix it in minutes instead of rewriting all your content.
How to find the leak
- Lots of views, few profile visits: the content entertains but gives no reason to learn more about you. Add a reason to look.
- Profile visits, few clicks: your bio or link page is unclear. See link in bio that converts.
- Clicks, few conversions: the offer doesn't match the audience, or the page they land on doesn't match what your post promised.
- Conversions but many reversals: you're overselling. People buy, then regret it.
Add an owned step in the middle
Many promoters add a middle step they control: a Telegram channel, a Discord server or an email list. Instead of sending every viewer straight to the offer, you invite them to follow you somewhere you own. You then promote to that audience again and again, and a platform ban doesn't wipe it out.
This longer funnel converts later but more reliably. How to grow a Telegram channel shows one way to build it. Always follow the rules of the platform you're inviting people from; some limit links to other apps.
Measuring your funnel week by week
- 1Give each source its own tracked link with the tracking link builder.
- 2Each week, write down views, profile visits, clicks and conversions per source.
- 3Work out the rate between each pair of stages.
- 4Pick the weakest rate and change one thing aimed at it.
- 5Compare next week's rate to this week's before changing anything else.
A Wingman at AMZA goes through these stage numbers with promoters weekly. Whether or not you have help, the habit is what matters: measure each stage, fix the weakest one, repeat.
FAQ
What is an affiliate funnel?+
The path from someone first seeing your content to completing the offer's qualifying action, usually attention, interest, click and conversion, with people dropping out at each step.
Do I need a website for an affiliate funnel?+
No. Many promoters run funnels entirely on social platforms with a bio link. A website or landing page is one option, not a requirement.
Which funnel stage should I fix first?+
Usually the one closest to the money with the weakest rate. Better conversion makes all your existing traffic worth more.
